Gina Conkle is a new author for me and I love giving new authors a try. More times than not I’m pleasantly surprised and want to read more of their books in hope that the writing and tempo of the story are consistent.

In The Lady Meets Her Match we have two focused business persons! Women’s liberation has started and the year is only 1768.  I’m sure there were business women who were not of the “world’s oldest profession” around at this time. So Conkle’s heroine is ahead of her time….this is a story that is as savory as the pastries you’ll read about (and possibly drool over).

Readers will enjoy the wordsmith mingled throughout this book which may conjure vivid scenes of moonlight escapades, the scent of fresh baked pastries and fresh brewed coffee, and let us not forget credible imaginations of a well formed man– ie: “Raw power roused, displaying itself in human form….arm’s the size of hefty iron hammers, and those limbs looked just as hard and strong as hunks of shaped metal.”  Oh yes ladies, the hero in this book comes to life so well you may look up and find him standing before you while you’re in a reading haze!

Speaking of credible, let’s not forget the hero (Cyrus) and heroine’s (Claire) story. Cyrus, a powerful business man raised from the trenches and who has fought his way to the top of his game. Claire, a servant to the men around her but a beauty who uses her brains to out whit the men who would keep her restrained. In a city such as London, where fortunes are won and lost on the streets, in government and trading markets, Cyrus and Claire strategically play a multi-level game which leads us, the readers, through a cacophony of emotions and word play that we won’t know the real outcome until the last chapter.

If Conkle’s other two books are anything like this one, I’ll be reading her books for a long time to come.  The Lady Meets Her Matchbook makes it debut on April 7th but it’s available for pre-order now.
