Intrigued by the cover, a female holding a pistol while in the arms of a man, I had to wonder what this novel would be about. (I’m not one to read the synopsis provided for books.) Would the heroine be a spy or a villain? What characteristics would the hero have since the heroine is holding the pistol? Would there be that interesting chemistry found in some historical romances or would it be the standard ‘yada-yada”, girl fawns over man/man fawns over girl?
What I found was a novel not unlike Shana Galen’s “Lord and Lady Spy Series”, Amanda Quick (basically any of them) or some other “who done it?” Devlyn begins quickly by letting readers know the set up of the characters and the story line from the start, moving and weaving through characters and plots to slowly reveal [and capture the reader’s attention] the real plot.
Should you find yourself wanting a little mystery, espionage and a fun read, Checkmate My Lord is a great way to read away the day [or night].
